BORDEAUX, February 9 (Ligue 1) - Bordeaux closed the gap on leaders Lyon to four points with a comfortable victory against Ligue 1 cellar dwellers Metz.Fernando Cavenaghi gave Les Girondins the lead with a 25th-minute penalty and doubled the lead after 72 minutes.
Alou Diarra completed the scoring with two minutes to play to get Bordeaux back to winning ways after their defeat at Lorient last time out.
Metz, meanwhile, failed to build on their 3-0 away win at Strasbourg in the last 32 of the Coupe de France, conceding an early penalty from which Cavenaghi sent Christophe Marichez the wrong way.
Marichez did make a good save 10 minutes later from a Johan Micoud free-kick, but almost conceded a second when Cavenaghi's lob from 16 yards fell just over the bar in first-half injury time.
The Argentinian striker looked destined for a second but his 20-yard effort was kept at bay by a stretching Marichez on the hour.
Metz, who are without a win since September, had their best chance to get back into the game on 70 minutes when Miralem Pjanic and Daniel Gygax combined to force a save from Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Rame.
Cavenaghi finally grabbed his second after combination play with Wendell, the Brazilian offering the Argentinean the chance to lob Marichez in style.
On 88 minutes Marouane Chamakh released Diarra on the edge of the penalty area, and the France international completed the win with a low shot to leave Metz 18 points from safety.
