CAGLIARI, December 2 (Serie A) - Cagliari and Livorno both continued to struggle at the wrong end of the Serie A table after a goalless draw at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

The result means the home side have now gone seven league games without a win and remain in the bottom three, while the visitors are just two places and three points higher.

The hosts dominated for most of the game and Livorno will feel somewhat fortunate to have escaped with a point after being outplayed for long periods, especially in the second half.

Livorno could have taken the lead on five minutes when Emanuele Filippini's shot went just wide of the right post.

Six minutes later the visitors went close again when defender Fabio Galante's effort from distance flashed wide of the upright.

The hosts' first chance came on 20 minutes when Robert Acquafresca collected a magnificent pass from Pasquale Foggia but volleyed just over the bar from 10 yards.

Cagliari midfielder Andrea Parola's shot from 15 yards was well saved by Marco Amelia in the 23rd minute as the home side started to dominate after a quiet start.

Amelia made another smart save on 34 minutes to deny Alessandro Matri, whose 20-yard effort had seemed destined for the net.

Rossoblu defender Michele Ferri shot wide seven minutes before the interval and Daniele Conti hit a 20-yard free-kick wide on the stroke of half-time.

Amelia made a great save to deny Diego Lopez seven minutes after the break, parrying the defender's close-range header away as the home side continued where they had left off before half-time.

Alessandro Matri's 63rd-minute effort went wide from close range and four minutes later Michele Fini tested Amelia from 20 yards, but the keeper made a comfortable save.

Spanish forward Diego Tristan could have given Livorno the points with 15 minutes to go but he blazed his effort over the bar from 20 yards out.

The home side enjoyed much the better of the second half and Conti almost gave them the three points they deserved eight minutes from time, but his 25-yard effort went narrowly wide of the left post.

Marco Mancosu tried his luck from the edge of the area for Cagliari in the 89th minute, but again the hosts finishing was off target, this time the young midfielder shooting wide.

Foggia, on loan from Lazio, almost made himself a hero in stoppage time but Amelia managed to block his close-range effort to maintain parity.

The stalemate is not enough for either side, both of whom could be in for a long winter near the foot of the table.
